Securing Your Commercial Property

By Karyn Stroet

Ensuring the security of your commercial property is a top priority. Not only does it protect your investment, but it also ensures the safety of your tenants and their employees. There are a number of measures you can take to improve the security of your property, including upgrading locks, installing security cameras and providing sufficient external lighting.

Keys and Locks

One of the simplest and most effective ways to enhance the security of your commercial property is by up-grading your locks and counting your keys. Keys should be registered and controlled to ensure there are no missing or duplicated numbers. It’s also a good idea to replace your locks periodically, especially if you’re not sure who has access to the keys. This will prevent unauthorised entry and ensure that only genuine tenants have access to the property.

Security Measures

There are various security measures that you can put in place to further protect your property. Mobile security patrol cars can be arranged to conduct routine checks of the area, giving you peace of mind that your property is being monitored. Installing security cameras is also an effective way to deter criminals and capture any suspicious activity. Additionally, fob entry systems can be installed to restrict access and record entry details. Doors and windows should be lockable and in good working order to ensure that the property is secure at all times.

Lighting

Providing sufficient external lighting around the premises is another way to protect your commercial property from criminals. Dark areas are common targets for thieves, so it’s important to ensure that all entrances and exits are well-lit. This will not only deter criminals but will also make it easier for security cameras to capture any suspicious activity.

It’s important to note that criminals entering your building will not only impact your tenants, but their attempts to gain illegal access will inevitably cause significant damage to your property. Repairing this damage can be costly and time-consuming.  Taking proactive steps to prevent unauthorised access, such as implementing security measures and upgrading locks, will not only help prevent theft from your tenants, but also help to minimise potential damage to your property.
